I am sure glad that I read the advice some months ago regarding winch mtn and using a shoebox with hole cut to tape down over the winch. I performed mtn this past weekend on 3 of the 4 winches on my boat. On one of them, when i went to reinstall the drum, one of the pawls and spring rode up out of the slot and the spring went "Boing". Luckily, it was caught inside the shoe box !
Completed mtn with no issues. Each went faster than the first. One winch was missing one of the 3 springs in it. I'll have to see if i can get a replacement but winch seems to work okay as is.
I am closing in on upgrading the circuit breaker panel and wire replacement to match up with the rewiring done to the mast last spring. Considering getting the BEP 901H panel. I like the switches somewhat imbedded reduces accidental switching. Also...a bit narrower than the Blue Sea equivalent. Probably will not start work until after the New Year
Larry, (not knowing what type winches you have) I bought a Lewmar maintenance kit from WM last fall. The kit included 10 new springs along with the grease, oil, brush, instructions etc.. I noticed on the shelf beside the maintenance kit that there were replacement paws and springs also available. So... you may be able to pick up that lost spring at WM (if you have Lewmars).
Thanks for the info. I should check with WM and probably also send an EMail to Lewmar (or PY Yacht since they seem to have a lot of Lewmar archived info) about replacement springs/pawls. It may not be so easy to get the parts for my winches since they are pre-1992 vintage. My Catalina was built in 1989.
I have 2 - 16 Self tailing Lewmar winches for the jib sheets, a Lewmar 6 on the starboard side of the cabin for the main halyard and a Lewmar 7 on the port side of the cabin for the jib halyard (which presently is not used since I have a furling rig).
HI guys...this prompted me to look at my winches. I knew that they needed to be worked, you could feel them not wanting to turn smoothly. So tore into them today. Wow, what a mess...the grease was so old that it had turned into gum and hardened in some places...used carb cleaner and that had a hard time with that stuff....it was nuts its like no one had ever cleaned them...I just got the boat this past summer...and have ran into little things like that..but that was really bad...no wonder they didnt work so well and sounded so sick. Well got one done, one to go...so bad Had to take them all the way off the boat. But the one thats done sounds and works so smoothly...its great, cant wait to use them. well have a great Christmas...
