Ok, I have been gifted a Brass Ships bell. its nice bell polished wont tarnish....My question, is where would you put something like that on the boat. I like the Idea of having a ships bell, will engrave it with boats name and cool things like that...but where would I put it. Any tips or advice. It also needs to be put on boat, its from the Admiral...so you understand. thanks for the help. Cheers
Tradition has the bell on deck - it can be used as a sound signal in fog in addition to sounding time and watches. But you can also put it below to rouse the off watch. A gift from the admiral - I would put it in a prominent location in the saloon, probably on the forward bulkhead. You could also make an argument for hanging it over the berth. : )
Once the bell is installed, you'll need to properly ring the Admiral aboard. As the Admiral is walking down the dock towards the boat, ring the bell six times,
Ding, Ding (pause), Ding, Ding, (pause), Ding Ding, then announce, "Admiral, arriving", then ring the bell once when the Admiral sets foot on deck.
Our boats are really small, if your dock has pilings I would look at mounting it on one. You can tell guests to wait at the slip with the bell, people can use it to "knock" and the wind will make it part of the sounds of your dock.
Or you can convince your "admiral" that the bell is a safety device to be used at certain times - during periods of limited visibility, for signaling, and need not be perminently mounted. I keep mine in the small starboard locker ready to hang on the boom bridle when I need it to signal my location in fog.
My bell by the way is made from brass 105mm shell casings by a Vietnamese artisen, and given to me by a close friend and crew mate. He has no problem with keeping it stored until needed.
My bell came mounted as Dennis suggested, "high on the compression post". It is used only as a place to hang jackets. To mount it on the dock posts around here would invite the shady ones who see items left unattended as unwanted and therefor theirs for the taking.
Sadder still, this is in one of the prestigious Yacht Harbor/Club/Catering Hall on the south shore of Great South Bay.
I often leave things, crab nets, bait buckets, fishing poles, hoses, etc. on and around the boat.. sometimes they stay.. other times they walk. A shinny brass anything, I predict, will walk.

It would walk at the yacht club too ....Mounting a device like that where it can ring in the wind would not be received well at 2am by the live aboard crowd. It would be on par with the chump who leaves his halyards clipped to the mast. It might walk just so it won't/can't ring.
