Hey all,

A big thanks to all who helped with pointers when my rudder got stolen. Today, i finally managed to get out on the water with the new rudder - balanced version - and i have to say, it's a vast improvement.

Rather than order one, i made one up from marine ply (2 sheets of 1" ply), and had the stainless steel bits fabricated locally. I reckon in all, including glues and varnish, it cost me around £160 (about $220 ?).

Fair winds,

James.

Way to go James!! A varnished wood rudder has got to look classy on your boat.

Did you use antifouling paint below the waterline?

James,

Cool. I'm considering this myself, you may have just finally convinced me. Did you follow the dimensions at http://c25c250.best.vwh.net/restricted/brudder3.gif? I suppose the rudder on a J25 and a C25 would be the same.

Post some pictures if you can. I'd love to see it.

Steve.

Bill,

As yet, i haven't used antifouling (too anxious to sail !) but i will be doing so sometime very soon.....

Steve,

The rudders are the same - the boat is the same right down to fittings, so far as i can gather. It was built under license here by Jaguar yachts, so i guess Catalina were shrewd enough to ensure that all fittings were bought from them. No problem with that - makes my life easier. The only difference being that in the UK, twin keel versions were made (UK sailors evidently being very good at running aground !). So yes, i did use the measurements that you refer to, although i added a couple of inches on at the top, just to spread the weight out a bit. I'll take some pics at the weekend when i bring it back for antifouling.....watch this space.
