This video was featured in a recent Quantum Sails newsletter - D1D One Design. Skipper Hammett has apparently taken some real bad press for taking what looks like a pretty inexperienced crew out in those conditions. Apparently though, he takes young sailors racing all the time and films their work to cretique their performance. This particular video is being used, with his permission, in several clubs as a training vehicle. It does provide a rather vivid picture of what can happen in a broach, how to recover, and what or what not to do in a man overboard situation.
The video has motivated me to get a camera and film some of my solo race events and cruises. To date, 17 odd years, I've only taken a few still photos of my sailing exploits.
Notice that the boat heeled but not the camera? I was impressed with the camera mount. Someone on the SA website indicated the camera was on a Horizon True camera mount (http://www.horizontrue.com/).
Wonder if I can build my own for less than the two boat units they're asking. . .
