If anyone can identify the type of boat labeled "A boat in the dinghy class" I'd appreciate it.
Also
If anyone can identify the type of boat labeled "A pretty boat, dockside" I'd appreciate it. It is canoe stern, cutter, about 32 feet, Not a Westsail 32. Looks very stout and nearly perfect for single handed blue water.
Nice shots--thanks! I'm pretty sure the dinghy is a 49er... haven't identified the dockside boat yet--looks a little like a Pacific Seacraft cutter, but the sheer stripe makes me wonder.
The dinghy was a mono hull, planing on and off the wind. Making about 15 knots. It had two outriggers which were flat like surfboards. The crew is standing up on the windward one.
"Pretty boat dockside" has chainplates bolted to the hull but the chainplate itself is inside (only the bolts are visible). Canoe stern with small cockpit (but bigger than Westsail 32).
Charlie took some more photos, perhaps he can post a few.
We raced a bare bones Catalina 30 in non-spin and did well, but we were DQ because we missed a mark on the leg to the finish line.
Jim, The dinghy is a "49er" you can see the logo at the top of the main. Here's the Vanguard link (then click 49er on the left menu) --> Vanguard-49er Russ
Jim and Gary: Thanks for inviting me... Whenever the opportunity to e-connect presents itself I will jot down some "first race ever", novice impressions of an awesome race on San Diego bay... It was everything and more I imagined
More pictures of the New Year's Day race on San Diego Bay. Finally got time to process the photos and get them uploaded. Jim,Gary, and Henk were crewing on the Catalina 30 sail number 11 "Mary A".
One of the shots shows 2 carriers berthed at Naval Station North Island, home of the 7th Fleet. We are Catalina 25 Fleet 7 in their honor.
I'm not sure the names of those 2 ships, we also have another carrier, the US Midway, a floating museum berthed by the cruise ship terminal and the Star of India (tallship).
Hey, guys. We all had a great time "mixing it up" with all those real race boats. Had we some really good racing sails on board we might have finished in first place (provided I'd not fallen asleep at the wheel and forgot about one last mark rounding ). I'll keep working on Mike and Evelyn to upgrade their sail inventory for next year. And I will always, from now on, put up some type of clipboard on the cabin somewhere to draw the course we'll race. Hey, Henk. You did really well doing the grinding. And your boat is still safe and sound in our yard. Hope your big ship cruise is going great. I'll start up your truck once a week to keep it lubed, too.
