Have been bashing this idea for quite a while. The C250WB has about 11" less head room than the C250WK due to the raised cabin sole (it's atop the tank) and the lower cabin top design.
I have to remove and rebed the screws that secure the cabin pop top hatch to the cabin top, while at it I'll remove the whole thing and give the area a good clean out (risky getting your fingers in there when it is all attached... one slip and kiss your fingers byb bye.
So, imagine the cabtin top with the hatch and slider out of the way. Now imagine a surround, abut 9" tall, positioned permanently in place where the hatch and slider go, and then the original hatch and slider installed on top of that.
It would raise the COG a fraction (probably the reason catalina lowered the cabin roof in the first place on the WB) but it would make an enormous difference heightwise in the cabin. I think the original pop top tent could still be used, but it may need some mods, the original pop top tent frame could also be used (holes in the new top could line up with the frame holes in the existing top.)
The area aside of the pop top would not change at all. In fact the new top could be removed and the hatch and slider replaced without any mod to the boat. This would simply be a 3 sided vertical 'wall' that fits into the existing hatch and slider opening.
Interstng thought... I think I would need to see some sketches in order to better understand. I also spend overnights quite frequently here in Florida and can appreciate any mod that may help me maximize room!!
Paul, send me an email regarding places in South Florida where you have launched, successfully. I plan on taking a week and heading down adn would love to not have to go "searching" for a proper ramp. Especially the keys.
Where in Florida? I launched my wing keel in Punta Gorda about 5 weeks ago after waiting 2 weeks to get 5 feet of water at the end of the ramp. If yours is a water ballest you should have very little trouble at any of the half dozen ramps around here.
We mostly launch from Black Point Marina in Biscayne bay, it's a state park and the ramps are simply excellent! I think there are 9 ramps, very well maintained, a huge 200+ truck-n-trailer parking lot with overflow if it get's full (and it does in summer) a bar & grill, fuel, ice, water. It's then a 25min motor into the bay through the black point channel, narrow, well marked and really not an issue. Parking is $10 per night, but we puchased an annual permit for $120 good for the entire year, we quickly get our money back on that one!
Next to that we launch from John Pennekamp state park, great facility inexpensive slips, another 20+ mins out to the ocean through the channel but well worth it. The slips are about 30 per night but include the parking. Showers, shop, 20 walk(sweaty) to west marine, 10 min drive to local stores. Very friendly folks, slip includes water and electrics.
We have launched and rented slip at Seabird marina on the bay side, not such a great marina, but great folks and 5 mins from the bay and sailing out under the brige to the ocean is great. Slips cost a bit more, but include water (not sure if they include electric as we didn't have shore power connections on the boat when we stayed there.
Our number one launch site is Black point, but there are 2 others nearby, Matheson Hammock state park and Homestead Bayfront marina, our pass works in both places, ramps not as good as Black point.
Don't forget to mention how SLIPPERY the ramps are at Homestead Bayfront !!! Do not get your drive wheels on the algae or you will end up with your vehicle under your vessle.
Ben you are right there, not sure why they are so different from Black Point. We motored into the Homestead Bayfront Marina just to check it out, suprised that the comparitive lack of amenities compared to Black Point. Even the snacks from the 'shed' were not that worthwhile!
