I am currently working on installing my new wwitch panel, however, we have had some warm days this January and so I have also been sailing.

I have installed the new switch panel and ready to start threading the wires in the cabin leading to the mast deck connector to connect with the mast rewiring completed last Spring. I just drilled a 1/2" hole in the shelf behind the porta potti (port side). Since buying my boat fall 2005, I never noticed the access hole that was in that shelf because there was a bunch of items (rope, etc) on that shelf and I never completely moved the stuff out of the way until this past week when I was drilling the 1/2" hole for the mast wire bundle. It is one of those Beckson style hole accesses with a screwed on plastic cover. I unscrewed it and all i can figure is that it was put in to gain access to thread wires such as the antenna wire up thru that shelf area. it is convenient because it will also help me thread the mast wire bundle thru the 1/2" hole. But I was wondering if there was another purpose for that access hole. maybe catalina put it in because for those that ordered the boat with a permanent head, they used that hole for something to do with that purpose ? Any ideas what it's purpose is for or is it just to gain access to wiring behind under the shelf ?

I have one on my 1988 but didn't need to use it when I replaced my head a few years ago so. It doesn't give much access to the plumbing in that area and all the original wiring is in the liner so what it was installed for is a mystery to me.

I replaced my head hoses last year. It did help in running the hoses from the holding tank to the head and up to the deck.

Besides access for wiring and hoses, I believe I also saw on the via that access hole are the lower mounting bolts/studs for whatever you call the stay support arms bolted to the bulkhead. maybe the access hole was put in to facilitate the bolting ?

This sounds like a job for CAPTAIN BILL.

My '83 doesn't have a hole there and is port-A-potty outfitted.

When converting my 1979 swing keel dinette C-25 from porta-potty to marine head, I installed the largest Beckson-style access plate I could fit on the inboard vertical face of the port side shelf behind the head. In addition to being able to get my hand in there, it's also a handy place to store important spare paper supplies wrapped in zip-lock baggies.
