Hello, all. I need to replace the SK winch on our 1980 C25. I'd like a winch with a lock-on handle, instead of the "slip on" handle of the factory winch (does that make sense?). When cranking up OR down, the handle frequently pops off, making it a pain to use, not to mention causing bumps and bruises to our bodies! Does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement? Would prefer one with identical mounting points, of course, but may be able to work with something different.

Thanks,
Jack

Jack, I seldom have the problems you're encountering with the winch handle. I wonder if you're being too vigorous when cranking, so that the winch handle gets "out of plane."

My suggestion, if you really want to semi-permanently attach the handle to the winch, would be to drill the barrel of both handle and spindle, tap, and put in set screws (like the set screws that keep the adapter on the winch axle). That way you can remove the handle to service or replace the winch.

I'm sure someone else has a better suggestion . . .

Jack,
Operating the keel winch requires some practice, but it's a simple skill readily aquired. Practice a few times while tied-up or moored. It's all about leaning into the handle to maintain proper seating.

jerlim and Brooke - Believe me, we've tried "leaning into it" and being very careful while cranking. The main problem is that the metal bar on the winch hub, which the handle hub slides over, is badly worn, and so does not provide the needed surface area; kinda like a screw head that's been worn so that a screw driver no longer can get a good grip.

I've bought a new handle and winch hub from Catalina Direct. The handle did help some, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the exising hub so as to install the new one. The new one has two setscrews to lock it onto the winch drive shaft, but the existing hub has no such setscrews. I thought maybe it would simply unscrew if the shaft is held from turning, but this didn't seem to work.

I've also had the idea to drill the handle and hub to accomodate a locking screw. I gave up when about 20 minutes of drilling the handle barely produced a dent. And yes, I do have sharp drill bits.

I believe the winch is factory original; the boat is a 1980 model. It's showing it's age, which is another reason I was considering replacing it, along with the cable and turning ball.

Thanks for the replies, any more suggestions?

Jack

Jack, if you do replace the winch make sure you put the teak wedge between the step and wench, if it is left out the handle will not have a clear arc to swing in.

Jack, your second post reminded me that when I replaced my winch a few years ago I had exactly the same problem removing the adapter from the spindle, and had Catalina Direct send me a new adapter. I had heated the daylights out of the adapter in an attempt to free it, to no avail. It sounds as though you need to bite the bullet and order a new winch -- probably a good piece of insurance if yours is original to the boat.
