I bought my boat a year and a half ago. How often do I need to pull the boat out of the water and have the bottom painted? Appreciate your help! ScottPuff

I have not sailed in seawater for many years but when I used to on both Long Island's south shore and north shore, I would paint it each year. It would generally have some barnacles stuck on the bottom along with slime.

Having returned to sailing after over 20 years, I have now been sailing in the Potomac River far enough upstream that it is entirely freshwater. Besides freshwater not having the same growth concerns - no barnacle issues just slime, the paints seem to have improved and one can get ablative or copolymer paints that can be used for more than one season. On my boat, the PO had an ablative paint and it lasted 5 years. I had it painted this past fall with a copolymer paint which acts similar to the ablatives. In order to keep the slime to a minimum, the boat still needs a pressure wash at least once a year - twice would be even better. A nearby marina charges $75 to raise the boat out of the water, pressure wash the bottom and then lower it back into the water. I believe many of the racing paint finishes are one season paints. Maybe not all of them but most.

I'd say every other year in salt water but have a diver scrub the bottom once per month. He'll tell you when it is time. You can get a pretty good idea from looking at the rudder.

In SF, saltwater, every two years, a coat and a half, diver goes down every three months.
