While replacing the lift cable this winter, I'm considering replacing some of the other components, ie; the eyebolt, turning ball and pin, and maybe the pivot bolts. What do you other 'swingers' regularly replace in addition to the lift cable?

I have not addressed this yet, but I have owned another swing keel boat on which I did a full keel fairing and replace cables, etc. Dropping the keel is the difficult part. Once the keel is down, it seems sensible to me to replace all of the wearing parts just so you don't have to drop the keel again for a long time. And incidently, I only had to do it once in 10 years.

I have a 78. When we bought her in 98 or so the original cable was on the keel. We didn't know the wiser until about 2002 or so when we replaced the cable the ball the pin and such. We did not replace any pivot bolts.


We replaced only the parts that you would find in Catalina Directs swing keel cable replacement kit.

If you have the 'old style' eyebolt in the keel you should upgrade to the new fitting available from Catalina Direct. It is designed to be resistant to twisting/misalignment that can cause cable failure.

Replacing the turning ball and pin is also an excellent idea if you don't know the repair and maintenance history of your boat. Ditto on the pivot bolts... it is very likely they won't be bad, but if the PO didn't keep maintenance records it's a good practice to replace them so you 'know what you've got'. While you're doing that you can have a look at the conditon of the stainless keel pivot pin and the bronze keel hangars.

All those components are pretty cheap in relation to their importance. (and the consequences of failure).
