After much thought about radar - I think I may have found a better solution to my fog running concerns/needs... AIS receivers will tell you the speed, direction & the vessels name for all commercial vessels and this receiver is under $200...

I'll need a splitter to run into the VHF cable running to the mast and I'll have to use my laptop and the Maptech software, etc...

Any recommendations or experience using AIS?

Sten,

I hadn't intended buying any more equipment for my boat but this is a super idea if it interfaces with my Magellan chart plotter.
Lake Superior gets awful crowded with lake freighters at night or in a fog. I'll look into this and get back.
