Has anyone replaced the battens in their main. If so did you go with the wide battens like the originals and where did you get them.

That really depends on who made the sail, when it was made (the materials have changed) and how it was made. That is - how big were the batten pockets on the original.

Generally speaking you want your battens to fit snugly within the batten pocket. You really want to struggle a bit to get them out as well.

Agreed - snug fit. Battens are available from WestMarine in a variety of sizes. I'm sure that everyone else's favorite supplier has them too - Defender. etc.

The four battens in my aftermarket main are all unique with each having different tapers and flexibility. Each batten is labeled as to what pocket it goes into and in what direction.

Didn't realize the direction the battens get inserted is important. Mine are diferent sizes, so knowing which pocket is easy. How can I tell if the direction is important to the ones I have?
Thanks!

The thickness of my battens are tapered from around 3/8" down to about an 1/8" or so. The narrower end goes into the pocket first. My battens have stickers on them from the sailmaker (UK) indicating both position (top, upper middle, lower middle, bottom) and direction into the pocket.

Wow, I didn't know about the taper on my battens either. I'll have to pay attention to that when I put the boat in.

Not all of them are tapered...If they are the direction matters

Ben,

Your battens may not be tapered. From what I've seen, most battens are rather generic with no taper and can go in any poscket and in any direction.
