Hello and good evening,
I plan on sailing a few times a year on Lake Erie. Do you have to have a closed head system or are Porta Potties allowed on Lake Erie? I currently have a standard closed system head but am considering a portable for increased storage and simplicity. I think I recall you liking a marine head regardless the portable has some interst to me and I am just researching options.

Also on my current head the pump leaks slightly at the handle on the up stroke, any thoughts?

Thank you,

Pete

Pete,

Hopefully 1 of those couple of times will be during Naitonals. Porta Potties are allowed, just don't dump the contents overboard....Pump outs are available at almost every marina that I've been to.

I'd look into a gasket replacement/refit kit to fix the leak. There's some technical name, but essentially it is a set of gaskets and washers and rubber valve gizmos that need to be changed every couple of years.

Thanks, We are hoping to do NA's we'll see what pans out. My sails are tissue at best. All funds for new sails go towards the Escow. That weekend is a non regatta weekend for scows so it works. Also my birthday on the 1st. We would love to try out the big lake in a regatta though that would be sweet.

Where might I find a refit kit. I'll have to check the manufacturer of the unit and start there.

Thanks again,

Pete, the pump handle on my head has a screw adjustment, and when it leaked, I tightened the adjustment, and it stopped leaking. If yours has a similar adjustment, try that before you go to the effort of rebuilding it.

Hi Pete,

I hope to see you at Nationals. Don't let your "tissue" sails factor into your decision though. My sails are original and I still had a blast. Am I gonna leave the Red Sled or The Wasp in my wake? Not unless I practice some sabotage, but Nationals was easily the highlight of my 2006 Summer. I sail on a lake smaller than yours, so being able to sail on the big water was a blast, and the race, the people and the facilities at Edgewater Yacht Club were incredible.
