Hi All,

I have a '86 Catalina 25 swing keel and I am trying to put my trailer on the road - LEGALY!!! I am the 4th or so owmer of this boat and the VIN has long since faded off of the trailer. Furthermore, the prior owners never registered it so I do not have a trail. I am trying to assemble as much of the VIN as I can. The make is EZ Loader - which makes the first three characters of the VIN 1ZE. The 4th - 8th are vehicle attributes as follows; the 4th position indicates style of trailer...5th position indicates type of trailer..6th position indicates model of trailer...7th position indicates length of trailer...8th position indicates number of axles. The trailer is an EZ Loader 6.6 TSR 4500. If anyone out there has the same trailer for their C-25 could you please let me know what the 4th - 8th digits are of the VIN? With that information the DMV can determine if a prior owner of my boat owned this model of trailer concurrently - and I will have the rest of my VIN.

Tom,

Sorry, I can't help you with your number, I have a Shoreline (EZ-Loader clone). However, you might look into what it would take to generate a title in your state with no previous V.I.N. I get the impression in some states it's laughably easy, while in others practically impossible. If you know anyone in your state who has custom built (not just modified) a car or motorcycle, ask them what's involved. Used car, bike, or boat dealers and independant repair shops might also have some practical suggestions.

In Ohio I was asked to make up a number on the spot. The clerk suggested I combine a few family birthdates. They were only concerned that I had an certified weight of the trailer alone.

In Florida, we just visited a tag company they gave us the documentation, then a trip to a weigh station and proof of weight, back the tag co, a week later, new tag and title arrived.

When we bought JD on a trailer, the dealer had an easy time of it.

It may be worth the move to Ohio!!! Here in NY they want receipts of the components of a "home built" and when I explained my sincere desire to follow the rules to the DMV they explained to me that I am in possession of a trailer that I do not legally own - and threatened to impound it! Oh well. I love a challenge - even a clerical one. Thanks for the ideas.

Here in CA they just gave me a sticker with a number on it to afix to the trailer. Sounds like you have done some research. Have you called Ez Loader yet?

Yes, I did contact EZ Loader. They told me the model and other information from photos - but were not able to give me the VIN codes

Tom,
I recently went through something like this with the trailer for my San Juan. At some point a couple of years ago, the DMV decided I no longer owned the trailer and wouldn't allow me to license it anymore. I didn't really care because the trailer just sat in my backyard unused. However when I decided to sell it, I needed to get the title issue settled. What I had to do here in Washington State was go to the Washington State Patrol office where they do a VIN inspection, upon finding none, or insufficient evidence to recreate one, they simply issue you a new one. This doesn't directly give you a new title, there's a three year waiting period before a title is issued, but you now have a legal trailer that can be used on the roads, and more importantly in my case, sold legally. Possibly you can go through a similar process in your state to get a new VIN issued.

I had a friend (a Sgt of Detectives) tell me that somewhere on every trailer, usually underneath, is a hidden VIN.

In Kansas I was told to get a plate and vin that it had to be inspected by a State Trooper guy...he would assing all info that was need, I was to insure the vin was put on Trailer. Then I could go get it all regestered. Now in Ky where I am at now its totaly different, they dont require a plate on the Trailer. So that makes it lots easier. So best bet is to check with the local people...

Tom, This will be of little use to you since it occured so long ago and I offer it in the hope that N.Y.D.M.V hasn't changed their practices since then, but back then I had an unlicenced trailer that I just sought a DMV form that you use to register a homemade trailer and I was done with it.
