I'm going into my 3rd year of sailing and 3rd year owning my Catalina 25. I havent spent an overnight on board but plan to do so this year. I may try to sail to Michigan City for a wedding if I can get my wife to come around to the idea. It would be a 40 mile trip each way. I really want to sail across lake Michigan but time constraints are a problem for me. The wife is already complaining I spend to much time on "My Joy" and I've only been in the water for two weeks! Go figure!

Not sure about big trips but we're going to Lake Superior this season after three summers on Leech. Our slip is in Bayfield, Wisconsin, so we'll explore the Apostle Islands; eventually we hope to jump off to Isle Royal, Thunder Bay, the Slate Islands etc., but may try to get into a heftier boat before then.

The San Juan's at the end of July. This is our third trip to this wonderful area, 800 miles away but worth the time spent on the road. Hopefully fuel costs don't skyrocket.

Lynn and I are driving up to Vancouver BC next Friday morning for a two-week Alaska cruise on MS Ryndam. Yeah I know it's not a sailing cruise, but at least it's a boat! Next year, if fuel prices haven't shot up too much more , our club (C-22 Fleet 4) is planning a cruise up to the San Juans. At least three skippers have said they want to go (including me), and maybe we can get two or three more that don't want to trailer their own boat but will charter a bareboat up there.
Fuel is going to be a real problem for this trip; the average price of regular gas out here on the left coast is currently $3.35/gallon, it's 1800 miles round trip, and in a typical 3/4 ton pickup that gets 8 mpg towing, that's $750 just for gas for the road trip. If it keeps going up, to $4.00 or even more, the trip will probably be cancelled.

Sometime in Feb 2009, we will tow Fellow Ship to the Texas coast. We will either hit Houston and go south, probably the inter coastal. Or we will go to the Corpus Christi area and do the Rockport, Aransas Pass, Corpus and points south trip. Either way we'll take 2 weeks and maybe a little more. I have the feeling it will be the first time Fellow Ship will taste salt. I think she'll do fine.

She'll love it! Are you leaving her in salt? If so, Frank's bottom paint might not be appropriate... as pretty as it is!

Dave, We'll only be at the coast a few weeks, then it will be back to the house and get her ready for another season on Eagle Mountain Lake.

Hi Duane,

fun topic. been away from the forum for a while, mostly been so busy with teaching and daughters. I spent last summer ashore having had my right rotator tendon re-attached. this kept me in a sling for half the summer and with a limited activity requirement for the rest. Nin Bimash II never went into the water. I am really looking forward to sailing the north channel of Lake huron this summer. I'll probably head for the Benjamin Islands and to Killarney and Baie Fine.

I guess the Wasp is history. Tell me about your new boat. Champaign and Riple is an interesting handle. I guess the champaigne refers to the boat and the ripple refers to the crew.
just kidding but sounds like fun. I really enjoyed the nationals in 06 and really appreciate the work you put in helping make that happen. i found a great marina in the UP where is was less expensive to keep the boat than the cost of bringing her home every fall so it is less likely that I'll be doing any trailer sailing.

hope you are well. my oldest won a prestegious acting award in NYC last summer and is now living in LA and working in the film industry. she has an awesome manager and a really agressive agent so we are looking for great things from her.

all the best,
John Vining

The Trip That Did Not Happen ! Well it was shortened significantly.

I have done a few overnighters but mostly day sail after work and on weekends. I wanted to do one major trip ...which based on what some others have accomplished, this probably does not seem like all that big a deal. I wanted to do an overnighter in the fall, going south on the Potomac River from DC area to stay overnight at the Quantico Marine Base Marina. The straight line distance is about 50 miles roundtrip but with tacking, it could be significantly greater in distance. I had checked out the marina a week earlier and in order to get a slip/check-in, I had to plan to get there before 430pm. I forget when I started off but it was fairly early and I had my 6 gallon fuel tank in addition to my 3 gallon as a safety precaution for the return trip. I had the wind against me and also the tide for the first few hours. It seemed like forever to just get under the Wilson Bridge and make headway from there which was perhaps 4 miles. I could have motored but did not give up trying to sail there figuring I would only motor on the return if it was a necessity to make it back. But once I passed the Fort Washington, MD area approaching Mount Vernon, I was perhaps half way to the marina and had less than half the time left to get there by 430pm. Rather than proceed and perhaps get stressed a bit to make it there on time (on my vacation day !), I decided to enjoy the day, take it easy by turning around and putting in just south of the Wilson Bridge at the new National Harbor on the Maryland side of the river. My wife and I had docked there for a few hours in the Spring just after it had first opened. This time, I would stay overnight...at a whopping $2.25/ft/night. (The Quantico marina was a fraction of the cost...believe it was something like $1/ft/night being that it was a miltary (govt) marina.) Anyway, I had a good time and had an easy sail back home the next day. The trip that did not happen will have to wait for next year !

I'm towing to Pensacola Beach or Ft. Walton Beach on 01/15/09 until 03/14/09. We'll probably do a couple of east and west overnights, but most of the time we'll be day sailing in Pensacola Bay and around Ft. Pickens.

Last year, the marina manager said that I didn't need to touchup my bottom paint before launch because the water is to cold to encourage growth in 2 months. He showed me several boats with no bottom paint to demonstrate, but that definitely doesn't apply in late spring through fall.
