It seems that the boat next to me on the mooring grid was too close and we hit. The damage is 2 vertical gouges about 2 - 3 in. long and about 3/8" wide down to the fiberglass matting. They are both above the water line. I put duct tape on temporarily so water doesn't get in. The questions are: How to repair? How to match the gelcoat beige color on the hull of my '86? Thanks for your advise as always.

It sounds like the damage resulted in the loss of gelcoat but not any of the actual fiberglass. If that is the case you need only repair the gelcoat. There are kits for this in the WM catalog and most marine stores. People always say that the hardest part is matching the color. There are color kits and the advice is to get the color match right before actually making the repair. I Think WM has an "advice" item on this and there are many resources on the Internet. Google "gelcoat repair" and you'll get some.
Daniel... I recall hearing that Catalina Direct has gelcoat that matches the various hull and deck colors that Catalina used. Time may have faded your color somewhat, but I'd give them a call.
When you get something, a few coats in the gouges can bring them up to above the original surface. Then some very fine sandpaper can smooth them down and make them disappear. The only people who will know will be you and everybody you show them to.
