Has anyone discovered a sealant that works well for rebedding deck hardware and resealing windows that doesn't cost an arm and a leg like polysulfide? It is up to about $20 bucks a tube now and I think that is just outrageous!
Yeah, I've watched the price on marine grade polysulfide basically double over the last 6 years or so. Maybe it comes from an endangered species or something. I think you could get pretty good results with a less expensive polyurethane caulk like Sikkaflex 201 or Boatlife. (at about $10/tube).
Dunno though... If I was doing a major project like rebedding windows I'd probably fork over the incremental cost increase of $10 if I figured it would last 10 years or so. Pro-rated over time, that's not a lot of money. Most of the time when I try to save a few dollars by buying a lesser product than I really wanted I end up regretting it.
It's been suggested elsewhere that the higher grades of caulking (from Home Depot, Lowes etc.) would work out ok too.
I did my windows using the best not the highest price which spelled out use for the metal frame windows to fibreglass. I had several leaks at the lowest part of two windows and when each window was removed found that there was little or no caulking at the tops of the windows. Wondered at the time if the deck and cabin were built upside down.
I'm not Bill but I will tell you that I used GE Silicone II at about $6.00 per tube instead of $12. It seems to work well and is guaranteed not to become inflexible. The true test will be a Kansas thunderstorm!!newell
