The scanner at the Cleveland Boat US (downtown not the one in N. Olmsted) has been toast for about 8 months. They have to key it in by hand....the swiper works for the credit cards though?
I guess I wasn't special enough. I went to West Marine, but there was no sign of a sale. I asked the staff, and they told me it was "private" for the chosen few. I guess my captain's card doesn't make me special.

I suspect that's the ticket... It makes no sense not to have one--it's a 2% discount on everything (in the form of the certificates they send you based on your purchases). A BoatUS card works too. BTW, the WM store here had signs in the store (10%, 20%, 30%)--it seemed to be for everyone. (End of commercial.)
It was for everyone, just was for July 27th - 30th only. But I got another mailing from them today and they've got some PFD's on sale as well as other stuff. But I need a decent inflatable life vest. Do I really need to put out $180.00 for the 4000 Offshore or is the inland/coastal boater variety for $90.00 sufficient?
There's no universal answer... I got the 1000 Offshore Manual--it has the same boyancy as the 4000. I went manual because in my case, there could be a time I end up in the water (off a kayak, for example) when I don't want the PFD to inflate (making it harder to get back on). On the flip side, I no longer have a boom to knock me cold. I also have friends who experienced a few unwanted inflations, apparently due to humidity. YMMV.
Dave, my advice is to get a PFD with the integrated harness. We have auto-inflatables and I wish we had gone that route. Now we have to wear the PFD and the harness when we want to tether in.
Thanks guys, except for the pic of those shoes, man those things are loud. I think I'll go with a manual since I'm on a standard rig and don't have a boom in my face, and will get the harness so I don't have to wear a separate one. More comfortable and easier.
