Back home after a great trip to the NW. The new disc brakes worked much better than the drum brakes, no smoke after a long down grade. The holding back is much more than with drum brakes. When shifting out of overdrive had to give gas to keep up speed going down grade as the disc brakes would pulled down speed to under even the slower trucks. There was never a side pull or any pulse of the braking going on or letting go. Very happy with the disc brakes and do not feel that adding set to second axle is going to be necessary. Any thoughts on this?

Will be back in our lake soon.

Jim,
I will be trailering mine this Wednesday to the lake for my first launching. I also put on the new Kodiak disc brakes. i will let you know how they do. I have to finish connecting the lines tonight and bleed the brakes.

I need to share also that I used the original lines but all new flex. As suggested used the #5 brake fluid. Found that by using the brake away lever I did the bleeding myself starting right at the new master cylinder, working down the system to the first caliper then the second. Used a clear plastic tube and clear plastic bottle to watch the fluid and the air bubbles until the bubbles stopped. With the tube down in the fluid I could leave the master cylinder and walk back to the caliper and tighten the bleed bolt. Did the procedure twice and the lever of the brake away was rock solid.

The disk surge brakes are fantastic for the big downgrades. I only have a single axle and dont think a 2nd axle is required if you have a 3/4 ton truck. If you are maxing out a 1/2 ton, you may see a safety benefit from a 2nd axle. I have about 4500 miles on mine towing in Florida and then to Seattle.

Tom.

Jim, glad you got back home safe and sound. I envy you taking a long cruise on your own and pulling it off so well. We have completed our disc brake conversion and will have a chance to try them out for real on our trip to the San Junas in September. Looking forward to your pictures and adventures being posted!
