The Boating Ban at Canyon Lake continues and looks like it could easily be extended into September. The water over the spillway created a new ravine extending about 3/4 mile to where is reconnected to the Guadlupe River. All the earth and sediment that moved downstream created two new islands at the Guadlupe River that virtually damed up the portion of the Guadalupe that ran from the Flood gate and the other island was built up from the sediment just downstream impeding the natural flow of water. They now have lots of heavy equipment on the river to re-construct the Guadalupe and re-establish normal flow. All this work must be completed before the flood gate can be repaired and re-opened. Meanwhile all the water incoming to Canyon Lake will continue to spill over the Spillway which is currently over 2100 cfs. With the flood gate wide open it can only handle about 500 cfs. Since thre lake will be unusable for a substantial amount of time I thought I would get Moon Chaser out and do a bottom job. I would have to motor up to another Marina to get Ramp access so I called to get a permit from the County Judge who told me to call the Corp of Engineers who told me to call the County Judge...Still working on that! Attached are a couple of pics taken from a Texas Dept.of Highways Helicopter of the Canyon Lake Marina where Derek Crawford and I keep our boats and one pic of the spillway/dam area. The thing about the spillway picture is that before the flood there was no run-off creek or flow area, it was just green trees straight across that entire area. The ravine that you see is 40+ feet deep in some areas and well 100+ yards across in some:
Dave, the smoke is probably just someone burning brush. Our current problem with going sailing elswhere has to do with the boating ban on the lake. There is a $500 fine and they impound your boat if you are on the lake. Those of us at Canyon Lake Marina would have to travel to motor over to another marina or ramp to get ou boat since the Canyon Lake Marina Road is under 20 feet of water. I am attempting to get a permit but I am unable at this point to nail down the Authority that will write a permit. Every call I make they point me to another authority and no one seems to know who is responsible at this point. I do have them talking about it though and I plan to go down and meet with the Comal County Commisioners court in person if I do not get a permit soon.I just want to get my boat out and do an early bottom job and add a depth/speed meter while we can't use the lake...All the sailors at our lake are going through major withdrawel symptoms like depression! Hi Steve,
I feel your pain ... I hope the lake level goes down quicker than predicted. I suppose I should be glad I had title problems with my boat and motor, or my boat might be stuck out at Canyon Lake too.
Anyway, I hate to get too far off the subject ... BUT ... what sort of depth/speed meter are you going to install? My old knotmeter looks to be beyond all hope ... I am thinking about throwing it away, plugging up the hole where the speed impeller goes, and relying on GPS or something else for speed. I don't have a depth indicator either ... can you get both in one instrument? Where/how do you mount it?
