I am getting ready to install (2) speakers on the cabin side of the bulkhead, Does anyone know the thickness of the teak on the port side near the gunwales. It is difficult to gauge while in place and I dont want bolts penetrating to the "head side" when I install my the speaker brackets.
I plan on posting this installation in the tech tips shortly, it was very easy, clean, and no cutting of fiberglass. And the system sounds great!
I don't know for sure, but I don't think the teak plywood in the bulkhead is as thick as 3/4" ... I think it is closer to about 3/8". A previous owner cut a hole in my starboard side forward bulkhead, between the V-berth and the hanging locker. I don't know what he had in mind, but there is nothing there but an empty hole ! I'm still trying to figure out how to cover it up.
Anyway, I'm going to the boat this weekend ... I can measure it if you would like ... just let me know. I suppose the plywood might be a different thickness, but that doesn't seem logical to me.
I'm looking forward to seeing your post in the Tech Tips ... I've got the same project on my never ending to-do list.
I am going with a 3/8" #8 Pan head screw, the speakers are pretty heavy (bought them on E-Bay) If i go through the bulkhed I guess I will just put a bolt, which will probably give better support.
I will post the pictures shortly in the tech tips shortly
Thanks Frank Hi Frank,

The main saloon bulkheads (at the compression post) hold the upper shroud chainplates--I'm betting they're more than 3/8"--more likely 3/4". A ruler will tell the story--measure the compression post thickness, and then measure in on both sides of the post to the surface of the bulkhead. Then you can use an operation called "subtraction"... If you don't remember it, ask one of your kids for help!

I got mine on eBay, too ... I wonder if we have been bidding against each other! Did you by chance buy Bose 151 speakers? I haven't received mine yet, so I don't know how heavy they are. Do your speakers mount with brackets?
Buzz No I bought those 300W outdoor speakers advertised for $37 from ikes sound, Bose is to rich for me, they sound ok
