Just wondered if anyone saw last Sundays 60 Minutes. The last segment was about a former HP guy who owns a 300' sailboat, the Maltese Falcon. They gave a tour of the boat. It was amazing. I have also seen ads for it in my sailing magazines. Of course everything is electronic. I would love to be a passenger on it. Did anyone else see it? Talk about wanting a bigger boat......

Yeah, but is it rigged for single-handing and can he take it out for an after work evening sail?

On the other hand, he could hang a C250 from the davits (WB, of course)

In that "class" I kinda like Mirabella V (a sloop) better, except she can't clear the Golden Gate Bridge (by about 70')... Either could probably carry a C-42 on her davits.

Dave, clearing the bridge is important! I am surprise the Mirabella V didnt think of that by having a retractible mast.

BTW, I just checked out the Mirabella V site. At least its rentable. Cost is $325k per weeek. Now if I got 500 friends, that brings down the cost to $650. Not bad! Anyone out there instested? Lets make a list.

$325,000/week includes a collection of PWCs, RIBs, and a 29' Hinckley Picnic Boat. Sail area on the 292' mast is about 40,000 sq. ft. Ready to fold and bag?

From the article on 60mins, it is controlled by touch screens! Not so much 'single handed' as one finger!

When we went to fleet week in NYC a few years ago we boarded a brand new Coast Guard cutter that was pretty much all touch screen also.
No paper manuals, all CD's and DVD's.

OK, not to get all political but these super-yachts are examples of extreme self-indulgence by incredibly self-centered people.

My hat is off to Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet who are giving their wealth away to help people all around the world.

With all due respect, Randy, 2/3 of the world's population could make the same judgment about people who choose to own a 25-foot sailboat.

It's all a matter of perspective, I suppose.

Bert, come on now. If 60 Minutes did an interview on Frank Butler, or a retired Army General or on the new commercial jumbo airplane, you would turn a blind eye? I thought we were more opened mined than most.

We saw it from our "Windjammer" tour in St Barts this spring. Very cool looking. Definitely got a "Dr. No" theme going. The rotating masts are very cool. I'm guessing this is the answer to: "How do you build a square rigged ship that will sail upwind".

Did some research on it...

Price: $100 million
Rent: EUR€ 325,000.00-335,000.00/wk for up to 12 guests.

And Randy, I too commend Bill G on giving away a lot of money, but he doesn't exactly slum it either. I'm guessing his house cost something similar.

Phil and the rest of you who may commend Bill, he is a guy who owns a company worth over $50B and can afford to give billions away. Lets not forget, its a right-off for him too. Maybe he even sleeps better at nite knowing giving to charities will make up for stealing in the beginning!

That said, my whole purpose of this post was about a sailboat. A pretty amazing one and not about ones politics or how much they give away. Personally I think those issues belong on another forum, not this one, which BTW, this forum has done an excellent job of.

Just a bit of perspective, Bill's place on Lake Washington cost around $26 million. I've talked to both contractors who worked on the house & folks who've been there for dinners. $26m is couch change to Bill, but according to the guys I've talked to it's a pretty nice place. I've sailed past it a number of times, but you really can't see anything from the water.

<Soapbox>The Maltese Falcon cost somewhere between $88m & $300m. He wouldn't admit to either figure, but stated that it cost around $1m/meter to build a boat like his, and it was 88 meters long. He also stated that he didn't want to cop to a figure for exactly the reason this discussion has veered away from talking about a sailboat to talking about excesses, he didn't want to end up talking about what he could have done with his money with charity & whatever. I say it's his money and he can spend it anyway he sees fit. Same thing I told my mom when she was trying to figure out what to do in her will. Told her she could give it to charity, or her cat. Of course I hoped she'd leave it to us (and she did), but it wouldn't have bothered me if she hadn't (much). For all we know, he donates millions to charity each year, but he didn't strike me as the kind of guy to cop to that either.</Soapbox>

I did like that you could single finger sail the boat, and wouldn't it be a kick in the pants to sail something with 40k square feet of sail area?

Not Soap box but perspective. People who build things like the Maltese Falcon end up with an amazing creation by SPENDING money which supports lots of businesses and people. I think it is wonderful the boating industry and boating science got to benefit from such a fantastic endeavor.

Now million dollar diamonds are just stupid! (oops)

Off my soap box now and simply commenting on the boat.

It is butt ugly.

Looks like they took the top decks off of a cruise ship and welded them to the top of a sailboat hull.

Yuk. Looks like a Mac 26X on steroids.
