Sorry, I don't have it but it is available online. But, they want $10 for it. You'd think they'd make archived articles availble for free to subscribers.
My librarian wife would tell you to also check larger libraries in the area. You'd be surprised what they have on their shelves. They often have pretty obscure publications.
For redoing the boot top and cove stripe, 3M's #218 tape is $9.00 a roll. I need 4 rolls. The article led me to believe that electrical tape will work and leave a clean line.
I am re-gel coating the boat. It's not like I'll replace the boot stripe in a year or two. It's permanent.
I already taped the stripes and sprayed the burgundy gel coat. However, I didn't mix enough pigment in the gel coat and it was translucent. Looked terrible. So I sanded it all off to start again. Need 4 more rolls of tape. If electrical tape works, as the article is teasing me to believe, I'd like to know if it is true. I will probably buy the 218 because I'd hate to spray the gel coat boot and cove again. It takes two thicknesses of tape to pile on 25 mils gel coat. That's 25 feet X 16 lengths. That's a lot of tape.
I purchased some burgundy Sunbrella and mixed the gel coat to match. It matched perfect, just didn't have enough pigment in it. I'm planning on Beige topsides and deck with burgundy boot, cove and canvass. It ought to look nice when it's done. The gel coat and Duratec High Gloss Additive really make the gel coat shine. Gel coat is way better than paint. Easy to spray. You gotta just spray fast.
The beige will be easy to mix because to mix because for beige, you start with white, which is already pigmented. The burgundy starts with neutral gel coat so the pigments have to be mixed then tested at 18 mils. I know that now. Once the weather breaks again, I'll be gel coating. I've been testing and working with this stuff for about a year now. It is really coming along nicely.
Dan, We have a terrific library system here in Maryland. I just checked online and one of the libraries has it. It will be delivered to my local library and I'll be notified by e-mail when it's in. I go to my local library at least once a week anyway, so it's no extra effort. I'll scan the tape article and e-mail it to you through the forum in a few days.
Bubba, I'm going to have to bust you for copyright violation. I may be persuaded to look the other way if a $20 West Marine gift certificate comes my way.
Practical Sailor recommended Intertape ProMask Blue at $3.39 a roll. RE: electical tape: "for those readers who truly want to economize on masking projects . . . use black electrical tape. The disadvantages -that some residue will develop along the edges and you'll need to use a knife or scissors to cut the tape . . ."
Thanks Will, That's what I was looking for. I'll call them on Monday. I had a feeling that the electrical tape was just thrown into the mix for the heck of it. I think for this gelcoat job, I'll use the good stuff. Dan
