What is the collective thought about going to all the trouble to wash wax etc. after haulout for the winter vs waiting until spring just prior to putting her back in the water? Is there any significant reason to not wait until spring to clean up the exterior. I hate to do the job twice.
I wash and wax at haul out/covering and at launch in spring. I like the idea that the hull has a good protective coating during the winter. C'mon it's not that hard to wash and wax a 250!
I like to clean up the hull after hauling out while the scum is still relatively fresh. My routine is to rinse the hull, apply toilet bowl cleaner with a sponge to the hull between the waterline and rubrail, let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes or until the brown scum line turns to bright white before my eyes, and then wash with soap and water.
I am doing a cleaning of top, sides and bottom right after it comes out. This way, the scum doesn't have time to set in. I also applied three coats of wax with my buffer. This helps keep the dirt at the waterline from sticking. In the spring I only have to apply the VC-17 to the bottom and it goes in. I also did a oil change and lower unit change to the motor.
