Does anyone have experience fitting a dodger to a pop top 25? I have some ideas on the subject, but would be interested in hearing from anyone who has actually done it

Take a look at this dodger setup from the Tech Tips section.

The photos don't show the pop-top up, but you can sure see how it would work.

Herbert: It looks like Doug & Ruth's dodger doesn't have one feature of the one Bill pointed to--a zippered window that opens on both sides of the pop-top, allowing it to be raised with the dodger in place. I've seen other pictures of the same thing, and was assured by a local canvas guy that it was a common feature--sometimes even on boats with no poptop (for an "open windshield" effect).

I was quoted $1250 for a custom job with the zippers.

Dave is correct. My dodger has no provissions for the pop top to be opened with the dodger instaled. The dodger however does not have a solid frame like the one from tech section. Its a frame like a bimini.
Two screws at the foot fitting and several snaps and the whole dodger comes off.

An alternative to the high expense of a professionally constructed dodger might be and SailRite Kit. Check out this installation on a C27.

http://www.sailrite.com/dodger_construction.htm

They have reasonably priced kits that can be customized to accomodate our pop top needs. I have been looking at my bimini to see if there is a way to make it into a dodger. Any ideas?

Ed: Take a close look at the link Bill provided above... It looks to me like a bimini frame and top with a windshield extension. One shot shows it without the windshield. Makes sense to me, but I'm not convinced it's a heavy-weather dodger. It depends on what you want.

I have one that came with my boat. I believe that it was an island nautical (??). I remember seeing one just like mine in the small ads in the back of the sailing mags. Mine was an offwhite sunbrella and heavily used. I had my top shop guys remake it in brown sunbrella. it is a true off-shore set up with zip up window (undo two twist locks on deck and the poptop can come up too), round "nautical" windows on aft portions, two stainless steel bows and reinforcing around bows. I love it and install every winter so I can sail through the colder winds. I know that new ones cost a pretty penny (between $1000 and $1500 just for the basic) but well worth it. If my boat hadn't come with one, I'd have bought one anyway. Hope this helps a little. This pic was taken a couple of years ago, I've since had my top shop guys make a new bimini based on a ratty one that came with the boat too. and added new covers in brown on just about everything.

Thanks Dave, I should have looked at Bill's link before my post. Leave it to Bill to have the answer.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> It looks like all I need to do is make 3 panels and zipper them on.

The only problem I will need to change on the bimini is that it is too wide to comfortably move along the side deck. I think that I can solve that one with a hack saw.

On the subject of Dodgers, another idea I liked was Ken Cave's (I think) custom unit with stainless handrails on the outside, designed for hanging on while climbing around the outside of the dodger to go forward. On the Tech Tips, Windstar shows something similar. That could add a boat unit or a couple, but you might be grateful you spent it the first time you have to go forward...
