http://www.latsandatts.net/magazine/onlineRelease.php is now available online for free. You can save each issue to your hard drive for viewing offline. Here's Bob Bitchin's answer to someone on their forum who asked the question; "Why would someone pay for a subscription to the magazine if it is available for free online."
"A very astute observation about why would you buy a subscription if it's free on-line. The answer is, you don't have to. But I know that when I want to relax, I turn off my computer so I can sit back and enjoy a good magazine. I know that this will affect our print circulation, but with the cost of paper, freight, printing and even ink tripling this is an alternative. I also think that, since the mag will be free, a few hundred thousand more people will start reading the mag. Then the 20% or so that prefer to sit back and enjoy their magazine every once and awhile will subscribe. There is a big difference between how you "sit forward" to read a computer and "sit back" to read a magazine. I am counting on the fact that a lot of folks prefer to sit back. Lastly, since we are able to actually count how many people will be reading each page, this will enable us to raise our advertising rates, hopefully covering the costs of lost subscription revenue. We will see. Yes, I am taking a big chance doing this. But what the heck. If I go broke I can always go cruising on a smaller boat!"
Bob is most likely completely accurate in his insight - gotta hand it to him. Reminds me of the old days when the 'Dead' would encourage people to record their concerts...it aided their album sales.
I went to the web site and ended up subscribing. His tactic worked! I like to read sailing magazines and have wanted to try L&A out. If you don't like the first magazine you get then you send the invoice back marked "cancel" and you don't pay a thing.
My favorite mags:
Practical Sailor Sail Pacific Yachting BoatUS (OK, not a "real" magazine but I enjoy it)
...and a new definition of "rail meat"... The New York Times tried charging for the more popular columnists online, and after a brief period, dropped it. I think they proved what Bob suspects.
