I thought I'd take this discussion away from Martin's thread. Since he's already decided on a wheel, it's related, but just barely.
Another thing I noticed about the hard link was that all the photos showed a motor mounted directly on the transom. It is next to the rudder with the link parallel (or nearly) to the transom. My motor is aft of the rudder when lowered. Don't know what that means but it's a difference I thought to be significant.
When docking, I leave the motor amidships. Once my "dock-o-matic" (a.k.a. spring line)is secure and I'm stopped in the slip, I then let go of the tiller and put the motor tiller hard to starboard simply to hold the back of the boat tight to the finger pier so I can easily reach the dock cleat from the cockpit. The motor is dead slow at this point.
Dave, I'll certainly defer to your experience. Just to be clear, I'm not hard over until very late in the docking process when a little braking is not a bad thing. Again, dead slow. BTW, cool pictures.

(Mixed thread going here...) John--when you're virtually stopped and using the engine to move the ass-end sideways, pushing the tiller hard-over makes sense. It's when you have some way on and want to turn as sharply as possible that it's counterproductive.
Hope I'm not offending anyone with the third pic...

No, Dave, She's lovely.............. for a stinkpot.
