Most of the sailing magazines are increasingly devoting more and more space to large yachts and less and less to 30's and under. What is the best monthly for us under 30's besides Good Old Boat? Specifically, what's the best mag for us Catalina-eers? Mainsheet excluded, of course.
I have been getting "Sailing" as well as "Sail" magazines. Sail definitely targets larger boats...like hardly anyone buys a boat under 25 foot or under. "Sailing" also favors larger boats but sometimes does have articles on smaller boats down to about 20 foot. I especially like their reviews of older boats. About a year or two ago, they had at 2 or 3 articles in one month's edition that featured the Catalina 25 and one on article on the Catalina 22. One of the articles on the Catalina 25 was on gunkholing somewhere...can't remember.
There is a small boat magazine...forget exact title but believe it favors boats smaller than 20 foot - trailor sailors. the boats in the 20-25 foot area seem to not have a specific magazine that favors this size range - kind of falls inbetween.
You would think that with various magazines favoring covergae of the larger boats, that the bulk of sailboats are large boats. i do not believe that is the case. But perhaps it is the larger boat buyers that buy more magazines...hence the coverage swinging that way ?
Practical Boat Owner - A UK publication. Seems Europe isn't as filled with the mega rich boat owners. A lot of DIY info and small (24-30 footer) boats. A lot of stuff on cruising England, France the Med.

Or perhapse more lawyer's and doctor's offices are subscribers to mags that make them look like they are wealthy... A lawyer friend of mine who is chronically short on cash has a beautiful wood panelled office with mags full of toys for the rich and famous. Its all about image.
I dropped Cruising World. Hardly any cruising articles that are not related to some charter, boats that cost as much as my house and 70% of the pages are advertisement. I'm stayign with Latts&Atts and Good-Old-Boat
My only issue with Practical Sailor has to do with their threat to send a collection agency after me and report me to the credit bureaus. I had accepted a free trial issue, and wrote "Cancel" on the invoice, as instructed. That's when the threats came back. When I did some digging to see where to return fire (with threat of a suit), it turned out to be an independent subscription agency, which I believe P/S fired. (Sports Illustrated tried something similar when I let my subscription expire.) ...just a winter tale... temps going back down tonight...
I just subscribed to DIY Boat Owner, received my first issue within a couple weeks of paying which was pretty nice. Its hard to judge a mag with having seen just one issue, but so far I'm impressed. This issue does not seem to focus on motor or sail, although it has both. It focuses on making repairs and such.
