Perfect spot to mount a wine glass rack (or any stemware).
You know the kind that hang upsidedown.

A roll of paper towels fit nicely in there.

I stuck a light puck to the ceiling in that spot. Provides a nice, unobtrusive light/backup light for the galley area. I do like the winerack idea. The admiral gave "us" 4 unbreakable nautical wine glasses with the boat name etched into them for Christmas, along with a pair of winch covers. I'm going to look for a wine glass rack for that space.

I put my fire extinguisher on the back wall and had a cabinet where your shelf is. And added a 110 volt 4-plex.

All good ideas. I'll have to reconsider the shelf/cabinet thing.

regarding the space in question. I built a teak wine glass holder and placed in in that space. the glasses hang from the stem as in a bar. I holds 4 wine glasses and two martini glasses. they have never come out of the rack
