I am replacing my sink/ice drain thru hull fitting as recommended by CD.(Current thru hull is brass, replacement is plastic) Has anyone done this job before? Our boat is on land this winter and it's great opportunity to get some hull work done. From what I can see the thru hull is flush with the hull and seems pretty embedded in there. On the inside it looks like they globbed the fiberglass up the thru hull pipe to the valve. Kind of like a volcano. I may ask the boatyard guys to do this job, but wanted to ask you all about replacing this part before I spent $$ paying someone else.
This has been a topic of many threads over the years... The Search function should give you many of them. Try "to-hull" and include the archived posts--that's the term that's been used for the infamous version that didn't go "through" the hull. I recall some pictures of pipes that crumbled in the process--not a good sign!
I didn't have to do it, but from all I've gleaned, it involves twisting the old pipe out of the volcano (a vice-grip should do) and then grinding down the volcano so you have a flat surface for the inside of the new thru-hull. The remains of the volcano could be an adequate backer--some have added a little epoxy-soaked wood or a piece of plastic for stability.

I'm getting a new valve and hose fitting from CD. They also have a mounting kit. I'm getting everything I need to make the upgrade.
