Can anyone tell me if the c25 fin keel while sitting on a trailer can be lifted by the fin keel with a jack? Is the fin keel strong enough to suport the hole wt of the boat? I want to refinsh the bottom of the keel, is this possible? thank you for your help..Don
On my EZ Loader trailer, the fin keel rested on a crossbar that had bolts on either end. When I wanted to paint the bottom of the keel, I unscrewed the bolts, and that allowed the crossbar to drop down, so that the entire weight of the boat rested on the rollers. I didn't leave it that way for any longer than necessary to paint the bottom of the keel. As soon as it was done, I raised the crossbar, so that it added support to the keel. Check your trailer to see if the keel support can be adjusted in that manner.
I'd probably try to lift the aft end with jack stands. You may be able to borrow/rent a couple from a local marina. You could lower the tongue of the trailer to effectively raise the stern. Place jackstands appropriately under the stern. Use a sufficient jack to then raise the tongue of the trailer high enough to lift the keel away from the trailer. You only need a few inches for a relatively short time, I'd imagine. I've done this with much a smaller boat but, it should work with the proper kind of stands and sufficient weight distribution accross the hull.
I wouldn't try to lift with just a jack under the keel. Supporting the weight wouldn't be as much of an issue as balance
In boatyards, my FK C-25 was stored so the keel supported probably over 80% of the weight of the boat, and the jack-stands primarily just held it upright firmly enough that neither they nor the boat moved. The bottom of the keel and the spots at the stands were always painted during the launch process. (Lift, paint, move, have lunch, splash.) But I don't get how you intend to paint the bottom of the keel while supporting the boat by the keel...
thank you all fo your replys. I want to strip down a fair my keel it is very lumpy. So the time is a little more than painting. I was thinking of jacking it with a bottle noise jack slowly and adjusting the pad hts accordingly to hold it up right while I fair the keel and paint the bottom. sound like a safe procedure as long as I take it slowly?
I honestly know nothing about this, but it seems to me that placing all the weight on the pads would be reaching a little far out. I'm thinking that looks about 1500 pounds per pad on our boats. Somebody correct me? We have an old derelict in our boatyard supported strictly on pads, and although it hasn't punched through or anything, you can see where the fiberglass is buckled in 3-5 inches around the pads. It's been there for a long time, though. I think you would be safer to figure out a way to keep as much weight as possible on some part of the keel as much as possible by shifting the blocks around.
