I am installing a VHF antenna on the top of my mast, the mast is down so I have access to the top of the mast by taking off the mast head assembly. But...the block on the bottom of the mast is riveted on with stainless rivets. Can I drill them out to get access to the conduit and replace with a bolt??? This is a 250WK but I am sure the WB mast is the same....Thanks for your help! Steve Steakley Moon Chaser #385
Hi Steve Yes, you can drill them out, that's what I did; but I don't believe you can use a bolt to put it back together (You will see why when you get it apart). I just did a job similar to this this spring (wind instrument)and it was not that difficult. You can buy a cheap rivet gun for about $20 (Home Depot) and you can get the stainless rivets at West Marine. (I wound up using the aluminum rivets that came with the gun. I tried using the stainless rivets, but they just didn't seem to work all that well with the rivet gun I had)
I used an electrical "Fish" to go up the conduit, & then tied the wire to it & pulled it down.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!!
Jerry, Your the man! I was really concerned about drilling them out and not knowing how to put the egg back together again! I bought a new bit today and I will drill them out tomorrow and finish the job. thanks for the solution! Steve
Jerry, the rivets drilled out easy (with a new bit) and I think I can use a #10 3-1/4" bolt/nut. I just have to make sure they fit inside the mast step. Once I got the bottom piece off the end of the mast, fishing the coax through the conduit was 5 minute job. Having the VHF antennea at the top of the mast will be great at our lake due to lots of hills etc. This is the first time I have had my boat out of the water and it makes everything so easy when it is parked next to your house where you can get tools/parts to the boat and complete these projects. "Moon Chaser" will be ready to go when Canyon Lake re-opens after the water receeds from the flooding. thanks four your help, Steve Steakley
Jerry, I bought the Rivet gun and used aluminum rivets as well, it was the best solution for sure. Now that I know how to use the rivets they came in handy for other applications where you do not want pointed end screws sticking through the mast or boom and threatening the lines etc. I appreciate your help! Steve
