Probably you're wondering what happened after our arrival home from our year-long round the continent trip “Living on board full time and going South”, here is the latest...
Our first reaction when we were back in possession of our home was, so to speak, to sleep under the kitchen table for the first couple of nights. The space seemed totally out of proportion to what we were used to during the last year with more rooms and stuff we would ever need. With our '95 C250 WB boat again stored safely in the drive way we set-out on a somewhat frustrating smaller house hunt until... it finally dawned on us that if we were to complete a 2 bedroom self sufficient 950 sq.ft. (approx. 95 sq. meters) suite in our basement and rented the top part of the house we would have the best of all worlds.
After weighing, budgeting & planning we decided that to proceed and build a "legal" suite which allows us to come and go as we please, have the garage to store and use as a workshop, the driveway for boat storage and a backyard to enjoy . That... was almost 4 months ago and today we are a couple of weeks from move-in. Most of the work was done by ourselves except electrical, plumbing and drywall eliminating any free time for browsing & participating on this forum. The result including a guest room is pleasing and much to our liking. You're invited to come by anytime if you can catch us home that is...
Next on the agenda is to travel 1100 km North to Smithers, BC and help build a new house for our oldest daughter, son-in-law and their 5 kids. Volunteers are welcome!! Sailing will have to wait until sometime September 2008 at the earliest Henk for Johanna too
Henk & Johanna "Floating", a few off your "barnacles". "Someday Lady" '95 C250WB #151 ('03 - 2016) "Sea ya" 30ft Bayliner (04-2018 - 09-2018) "Mariah" '96 C250WB #191 (05-2019 - 15-05-2023) "Lady J" '00 C250WK #499 (05-2021 - 09-2022)
Good to hear from you again Henk. We of course have been keeping tabs on you because we've been discussing a similar adventure. We're going to be heading out to the Island for spring break - we'll call to see if you're around.
Re: the living space - we did a renovation two years ago and are now living in a 900 Sq ft house (along with lots of storage space, large backyard and garage) We love it. Downsizing has been very good to us.
Henk, Checked out Smithers, B.C. on google --looks like some beautiful country. Have fun and stay in touch.
If I remember correctly, you were scheduled to show Someday Lady to the world at a tradeshow(?) upon returning from your cross-country adventures. How did that go?
Thank you Frank... we feel very much at home and have learned a lot from the forum discussions. Your words are appreciated...
Mike we regret that by the time you're in the Vancouver area we will already have left for the north and will again miss going for dinner with you!! (remember I invite.. you pay!!) However since our return we have learned that there are two other people in the Vancouver area who recently acquired '95 C250 WB. Both Peter's participate on this forum and if they read this message may perhaps respond to arrange something or other for when you are in our area...!! Thanks for your encouragement regarding downsizing to less than a 1000 sq.ft.. It took us seemingly for ever to decide the housing question.
Gerry... Smithers, BC indeed a very beautiful town located in the Bulkley Valley and on the Alaska highway route. Two of our married kids with 7 grandkids live there providing us the opportunity to visit and explore the area frequently.
We indeed ended our year-long round the continent trip “Living on board full time and going South”, by the displaying our '95 C250 WB #151 sailboat in the feature area of the Can West Horticultural trade show held downtown Vancouver September 12-13th, 2007 in the Vancouver Exhibition and Convention center. Since no “hook-ups”, were available in the feature area, the show management put us in a 5 star hotel for a week. It took us almost a week to make the boat “show ready”. The Theme of the 3500 plus visitor horticultural trade show was “sailing into the future”. Exhibitors, industry visitors, guests and show management felt the display was a hit. To illustrate the display I've enclosed a couple of images. You'll note that the trailer was hidden by lots of iridescent cello making the boat appear to be in the water. Both the deck and cockpit were filled with floral material.
Our "home", on display at the Canwest Horticultural Trade Show, September, 12-13, '08 after return from our year-long trip.
The trailer was hidden below the iredescant cello to look like water
The boat's deck and cockpit were filled with flowers
The "under the sails", Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Center is located downtown right on the water
