Okay...all of this is fine ! Sure glad I have an '89 ! But you know, I have real fond memories of my new 1980 ODay 23. It was a fine boat ! Then I get out of boating for awhile when I moved with young family to VA...then I get back into this again...and no more ODay Company ! My ODay 23 at least had a hinged table that you did not have to completely lift up and put into bulkhead support. What is the story with that on the at least the Cat '89s - the table is certainly not an improvement except it's large. If you lean on it in the wrong place, it lifts out of the bulkhead hinges. You can buy the fix for that from Catalina Direct but why was that not designed right from the beginning.
Anyway....what I really want to know is.....................................so what is the decision already about which Catalina to buy ?
<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">my first design criterion would be anything with the cockpit fuel locker (meaning '82 and newer, as I vaguely recall). <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Frank ..... You mention that the 88 doesn't get thje extra headroom or flat floor, but this quote from the 1988 sales brochure: "The new Catalina 25 has a larger cabin sole, and increased headroom throughout." implies that the 88 does indeed have the extra headroom, etc.
Catalina changed things when they finished the mold changes. It does not surprise me that the new floor made it to some boats labeled as 88s. An ongoing issue is how to describe our boats relative positions in the production run of the Catalina 25. A great contributor came up with the "Mark" series which would simply place the flat floor boats in the Mark IV series. Some were HID'd as 90s but it is widely believed production stopped in 89. Collectively the flat floor boats are referred to as 89s. Does the 88 brochure show recessed handrails on the cabin top? I have often wondered if the redesigned pop-top and the flat floor were implemented at the same time or just very close to each other.
I am not sure exactly what you mean by recessed hand rails. As far as I can tell from looking at your website for the '89, my '89 has same style hand rails but did not consider them recessed. I do not have any close-up photo details of the rail to look at from here. I am going down to the boat today...probably will go sailing for awhile. I will take a look...maybe you are talking about the fiberglass access from behind the rail and how that is shaped or configured below the pop top edge ?
I went sailing for awhile and took some photos...one of the rail. I think maybe I understand about the "recessed" comment. You can look at it as though the rail is recessed or....that the cabin top was increased in height just inboard of the rail. Here's a photo that I think depicts this:
The 89 pop-top is countersunk, the others sit on top. The 89 has a sophisticated drain track that the pop-top sits in that is much more weather tight than the other type.
