Do you thing Catalina 25 would fit in a standard shipping container (40x8x8, roughly)? The container is nominally 8ft wide, as is Catalina. But internal width of the container is more like 7 ft 8 inches... What is the real width of Catalina? Could she be put in leaning slightly to one side so the beam would still fit?

One of the trailer manufacturers shows a pic of an oversize sailboat tilted at an angle for over the road shipping, so the C-25 might ship safely in a slightly tilted position. I would think you'll have to remove the keel first; might have to do that anyway due to the height limitation.
Sounds like a question for Frank Butler or one of his engineers at Catalina Yachts. They've probably already had to deal with this question.

Given the cost of shipping and the price fo C25s it might be better sell the boat and buy another one at the distination.

An alternative to a shipping container is building your own shipping crate. Have your boat shrink wrapped (cost about $14/ft), then build a base out of 6X6's, uprights and crossmembers of 4X4's and you will have a shipping container that will keep the weather out, and you will have enough wood to build a fence when you arrive at your destination. Will be lighter than a metal shipping crate, and your over-all dimensions will be 8' wide X 25' which will allow it to be shipped and handled with metal containers.
A shipping company will give you minimum materials list. IE Lag bolts, pressure treated wood, metal brace brackets.

Unless you remove the bow pulpit and motor mount, won't the overall length be more that 25'. Also, the SR mast is 28' and TR is 30'. That would have to be placed at an angle in the container unless it is crated separatrely.

Thanks for responses. Motivation? Moving overseas. The move's shipping allowance includes a standard 40ft container.

And, if Catalina 25 does not fit, what smaller sailboat you suggest of otherwise similar qualities (relatively simple, inexpensive, easy to sail, robust...) to take along? Not a great selection of boats at destination (Lake Victoria, Africa).

Do they sail any traditional boats there, might be fun to have one of those that you could put into tip-top condition. I bet your funds from a C25 would buy a lot of boat there.

A C22 on a trailer will fit into a container with room to spare if you take the axle off the trailer and roll the trailer frame and boat in on dollies.

Sounds like an absolutely exciting trip. Try to find out what smaller boats are there already and popular, buy one of those, take it there, and sell it before you leave. Do you need a cruiser there? just a thought.

GaryB, thanks for the answer!
Sesse (or Ssese) canoes and dhows is what you can find locally -- for living. And Lasers -- for fun.

I know that the club I belong to just sent a bunch of boats to India in Containers to start a sailing school there. I believe that one of the boats was catalina 25. Email me and I will put you in touch with the right person.

Sorry I don't know the details as I was not involved in the deal.

Wonder what the cultural implications are to showing up with a boat that says Catalina YACHTS on the side?
