Hi guys, has anyone replaced all their halyards, if so, can you give me an approx cost on good quality halyards, thanks mine look a little discolored and a couple are slightly frayed, and can they be done while the mast is up? just curious as to what I'm looking at money wise,,
Are yours all-rope or the original wire-to-rope? If the latter, you probably need new sheaves at the masthead to fit the rope size you pick (commonly 5/16"). I see from your pic that they're led back to the cockpit, so they're probably all-rope replacements. Catalina Direct is a reasonable source, has good low-stretch, pre-spliced halyards, and knows the lengths. Be sure what you get is right for your clutches.
Catalina Direct has kits for wire/line and all line halyards, West Marine has pre-made wire/line halyards, both standard lengths and custom, and Rigging Only can fix you up with anything, so there are many venues for price comparison. I got masthead sheaves for all line conversion from CD and 70 ft of 6mm and 8mm New England Rope V-100 and eye spliced the ends. After I did the main and saw how slippery the vectran core is, I did a tapered and tucked cover with a core to core splice on the jib halyard. I should probably redo the main that way, but I'll wait and see if the main falls down.
I replaced mine last year with 5/16" Sta-Set X line, which I believe is a common choice. $61.00 plus $11.73 shipping for a 65-foot halyard, shackle not included, from Milwaukee Rigging eBay store. If you run lines aft you probably want 75 feet. If you currently have wire to rope halyards, figure in the cost of replacing the masthead sheaves, which you can get from Catalina Direct, in order to go all line, which is recommended.
Samson XLS Extra T is another option. I recently replaced my main and genoa sheets with this line and it is also recommended for halyards. Defender Industries offers decent cost/ft on this line compared to other distributors.
