Many know of the quarterberth Air Conditioner system I have used on my two boats. I use a 6,000 BTU window unit in my quarterberth bulkhead, venting into the sail locker.
I have looked at a true ducted marine AC and may go there, but I have gotten one of the rare Krusin Kool Suitcase AC units. These are true marine ACs and work well. This is rated at 7,000 BTU. I would like to install it in "semi-permanent"mode so it will be available as soon as shore power is plugged in. There are two locations on my boat that would work. It could sit in the dual battery box under the companionway steps or could sit in the v-berth area. The V-berth will be the first spot to try.
It will be several more weeks before I can try it. I have spent a lot of time with these on other boats and I know it will cool very well, my experimentation will be with the location. I really hope the v-berth works out because of the through hull under the v-berth and the through hull in the side of my anchor well, they will provide inflow and outflow. If I go with the aft location I will use the through hull at the galley for inflow and use the bilge pump exit in the transom for outflow.
Frank, How do you deal with the 20 degree angle limitation? or do you just let it "settle" for a few hours after a sail. I assume it is mostly for sleeping on those muggy august nights. do you know what the power draw is?
My window unit has always fired up immediately without any wait time and I will fire the Kozy up immediately as well, if it can't cut it then I will declare it a failure. I typically run my AC A LOT because I like my privacy, comfort, and hate bugs. I fire my AC up when I dock and turn it off when I leave to go sail. I expect that when I launch next week I will already want it at times. My car is already turning on AC when I get in after work.
