Hello All: I am new to the Assoc. just got our new(to) us Catalina 25 #5999. I have had 2 other sailboats in the past, a Venture and a wb Mac-Gregor, they both had conventional mainsails. The admiral and me just got the "new " boat and I am going thru it cleaning, rigging and trying to figure out how everything works. The mainsail was strapped to the boom, mast was down, boat on trailer. When I removed the sail from the boom I realized that it will be pretty awkward to handle. Also I read that one should not reef a full battened sail. Can anyone suggest where I could get more information on using this rig, or perhaps enlighten me? The boat will be used for cruising, we have had enough racing in the rat race. Thanks, Loren
If your sail has reef points (grommets), you can reef it. If you post pictures of it, the experts here will weigh-in on how it is best rigged and sailed. This is a much different boat than your WB Mac. At the opposite end of the tender scale for one thing. The C25 is a head sail driven boat where your Mac was a main sail driven boat.
Ventures were/are terrific boats, and I think you'll find it has a lot more in common with your new Cat than your Mac.
That's what we were hoping as it scared the admiral when we heeled over, very tender. The sail is labeled Lazy Mate by North Sails but i can't seem to find any info. Loren
I wonder where you read about not reefing full battened mains. Total baloney at the least and a bald faced lie at the worst. So do you have a wing or a fin? Your wife should take a sailing class on SunFish so she will learn about sailing and heeling. Heeling is sailing, flat is floating. By the way, saiboat racing is just an activity that gives a boat owner something else to do and more camaraderie with fellow sailors, it is about fellowship, not about winning.
Welcome to the'89 fleet, you have the best of the best in hull #5999
My boat is a 1990 std wing keel. The wife has gotten used to the fact that sailboats heel, we are looking forward to when we get her in the water. Right now I am fitting her with a second battery, shorepower, redoing the woodwork , vhf radio and replacing the standing rigging. She is in pretty good shape but I like to tinkerand am just getting to know her. I wish that I knew where I read that about the reefing, will let you know if I find it again. Is sailing with a full battened main any different that with no battens? thanks, Loren
A fully battened main has its advantages in stronger wind conditions. A partially battened sail is better for light wind conditions. Do you know if PO was a racer?
