I'm getting ready to haul out my Swing Keeler for regular maintenance.
Last haul out (1.5 years ago) I had the keel sanded (not removed) and went with the marina's suggestion for applying a rust inhibitor. This was then covered with several coats of ablative bottom paint.
Its worked out relatively well, but I've started getting some barnacle growth. Growth is caused by rust spots on the iron causing the bottom paint to flake off.
I don't have the time/resources to remove the entire keel, sand, epoxy, etc.
Any suggestions on a less involved/costly way of sealing the iron keel without removing it?
Anyone else try 6980 Rustlok Steel Primer or other products that have worked well? Once the rust starts, it flakes any coating off. I'm hoping that the 6980 Rustlok Steel Primer will seal the keel and inhibit rust formation.
I suspect that no matter how much you sand, there'll still be some rusty pits that will be the source of future rust and flaking. It might be worth looking into a "rust reformer" for those spots--I've used one from Rustoleum on car rust (back in the days when cars rusted), and it seemed to stop the rust in its tracks. The Rustoleum version is a whitish fluid in a plastic bottle, and when applied to a rusty area, turns the metal and rust coal black, leaving a clear coating on top. You could then prime and paint on top of that. (They strongly recommend painting over it.)
Note: I haven't tried this on a keel--mine is glass-encased lead.
