I am the original owner of my Catalina 25 - #CTYK2152M80. I am having difficulty selling it. Apparently, the serial number is incorrect. And, it is not on the transom like it is suppose to be. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
The HIN is applied to the transom with a nail and is scratched into the gelcoat as close to the rubrail as possible. They are often very faint. Your HIN matches as far as I can tell, the year and sail number match up.
Thanks, Dave! I think the last character is suppose to be an "L". I took delivery in August 1980 in Shady Side, MD. It was manufactured in July 1980.
NC won't accept the HIN because it doesn't have enough characters. And, since it doesn't appear on the boat it can't be traced (as they said they require). So, I guess it can't be registered in NC. Interesting . . .
Oh, I looked at an old photo taken on 2 Apr 1981 showing the transom area where the serial number is suppose to be, but no number. There appears to be something on the upper part of the starboard side - just around the corner from the transom, but I can't make it out. Could this be where the number is located?
Also, I have heard that there is suppose to be a secondary location for the serial number. Does anyone know where that might be?

Dave, I tried calling Catalina, but I can't get anybody to answer or return my calls. I have never had very good luck with them.
[I also own a Hunter 31. Fortunately, I only live a few miles from their factory in Alachua. So, I have had much better success with them over the years.]
Who did you buy it from? I don't think Catalina put the number anywere else, but it's hard to see in the gelcoat. Frank's was done more carefully than mine...
OK, you know the month--scratch the whole number in yourself with a slightly-hot nail, about 1/2" numbers, just below the rubrail on the starboard side of the transom.
It could be around the corner, though I am fairly certain it is located on the transom.
If Catalina yachts can't get you a copy of the bill of sale, and NC isn't going to come and actually look at the transom, then you can always just take your best guess.
There is not going to be another boat with that number regardless of whether you say it is an A or an L.......
Alternatively, NC has to have some sort of exception process, what do they do with boats built before 1972?
FWIW, my HIN is on the starboard side, not on the transom since the 250 transom is sloping and not as sharply defined. I was surprised to see that they were still scratching the numbers in 1999.
