Hi Everyone. As far as I can see the original thru hulls or to hulls are 1/2" but I notice Catalina Direct only sells 3/4" and that size seems more common. When I replace them is it advisable to make them 3/4"? I am just wondering. I want to put mushroom fittings and sea-cocks. Thanks.

Hi Charlie,
Are you talking about these?
Putting one of these through the hull and then screwing a ball valve on it is not exactly the recommended way to do it. A true sea cock, or through hull will have a flange that is bolted to the hull with the valve incorporated into it. Threaded connections are used from there on.
I used Marelon through hulls from Forespar. They are bullet proof and non-corrosive. There are provisions to bolt these to the hull also and that is what I did. Of course you can always buy bronze and use the appropriate mushroom head. The correct mushroom head will have strait threads.

New technology, new ways. Glass reinforced nylon or marlon - both are fine. High density plastics provide the opportunity to separate the functions of through hull and proper valve without the risk of corrosion at the metal to metal joint. The only downside is a little more drag from the mushroom compared to a flush throughhull.

Thanks, guys. What I had in mind is a true sea cock or thru hull. What I am not sure about is the sizes involved. It looks like on the Catalina they are all 1/2" but that size does not see as common. I wonder if that means I should go to 3/4'? Not sure.
