Folks, I want to attach broom clamps on the ceiling of the aft birth to hold the stainless arch for my pop top and was wondering about screw length. Anyone done this? How long should the screws be? Willy
I used 5/8" screws and cut off 1.5" pvc tubing. (my usual trick of converting the screws into self tappers by dremelling a grove along the tip of the screw).
The deck is over 1" thick there on our 2005 model.
Paul, Thanks! Not only did I follow your advice regarding screw length, but after looking at the hardware options for the broom clips I decided your PVC idea made better sense. PVC + Stainless = no rust or corrosion! (I'm in salt water). Works great! Thanks, Willy
I will try to take some this weekend, but I have to borrow a digital camera to do it. What I did was buy two 2' sections of 1.5" PVC pipe at Lowes. I hacksawed straight down the diameter of both ends of both tubes for about 2"...then I sawed from the side of the tube...removing the pvc and leaving a sort of tongue. I drilled throgh the tongue to facilitate screwing into the ceiling. I held the arch to the ceiling so that its center was outside the stainless stair rails. (It does not protrude far enough to trip anyone). I marked where the arch "legs" ran against the ceiling and mounted the predrilled PVC pipes there. Voila...I slide the arch in and secure it so that it does not move forward with a bungee around the stair rails. Oh yeah, I used 3/4 inch stainless sheet metal screws to hold the PVC tubes to the ceiling. Whew...a picture IS worth a thousand words! Hope this made sense... Willy
As I think about it, I could have saved myself a lot of sawing by just drilling 1/4 holes through both sides of both ends of both pipes. Then using one of the holes as a pilot on each end, enlarging the holes on one side to 1/2" so that I could get a screwdriver in there to tap into the ceiling. 20-20 hindsight!

Guess I am fortunate in that I have 2 digital cameras. Both are fairly inexpensive but I keep the older one of the two on the boat so if a beautiful sunset appears or a dolphin or whale swim by, I can snap a pic. Put on to do list! Steve A
