I've owned the boat since April. I didn't get a survey. I can't say for certain that this crack was present at that time. As best as I can describe it, the crack is across the top of the 3" to 4" thick cockpit side wall in the knee of the upward curve joining it to the rear wall of the cabin.
My question is what this might be indicative of, and what repair action I should take?
It sounds like you're saying it's in the corner between the coaming and the cabin bulkhead... That's an area prone to "spider cracks" in the gelcoat--very thin cracks that do not go into the fiberglass. If it's a hairline crack, it's probably just the gelcoat--generally caused by it being a little too thick in those curved areas. If you can detect some difference in the levels of the surface on both sides of the crack, then it could be a stress crack that has affected the laminations below.
Gelcoat cracks are cosmetic issues only, and can be repaired by opening the crack just a little and then filling it with one of any number of gelcoat repair kits and sanding/polishing it down. I think I've heard that Catatlina Direct has some that match the colors on most C-25s.
A real stress crack is probably out of my realm--I'd get a pro to look at it and tell me what the cause is, and probably reinforce the area from inside as appropriate.
