The u-shaped shackle that connects the bottom main sheet block to the traveller mechansim flew apart on Sunday...The screw in pin which goes through a ~1/8" hole in a pin on the bottom of the block fell to the deck...the u-shaped piece fell in the water...Can you guys help buy the right replacement part? I don't even know what to ask for.

I had the same thing happen to my boom vang on Monday. I will be replacing the screw in shackle with one that I can install a cotter ring. I think the only criteria is that the clevis pin fit thru the hole on the block. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

You need a shackle. Go to the local chandler and you'll likely see a wall of them. Pick one that looks like the one that went swimming. Take the clevis pin you have (<i>"The screw in pin"</i>) and that will help you with sizing the shackle. your new shackle will come with a new pin. Buy Stainless Steel.

A clevis pin shackle?<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">You want a "stamped D shackle". If it's a screw-type, it should have a hole in the flat tang on the screw--after screwing it closed, put a plastic wire tie through the hole and inside the shackle to prevent the screw from turning. You can also get a stamped shackle that has a plain clevis pin with a cotter ring. If so, replace the cotter ring every year or two.
If you just want replace the original shackle, do as John suggests. I am hoping to replace mine with what seems to be called a "stamped shackle" because they have a cotter ring. I am not sure if they are strong enough though. BTW, it's helpful to have a few extra shackles onboard. I did, and on Monday, I just climbed up there and replaced the original and continued sailing
