Thank God others have had this "challenge". I sail on the Peoria river, and have learned (the hard way) what it means to get stuck in the "mud". It would not be a good idea on this river to "get out and push" as you would probably sink about 6-8 feet in the mud before being able to push on anything. When I went aground it was an opportunity to find out that (1) my shore radio did not work (2) other motor boats ignored my call for help (for about 1 hour), and that the water police were helpful in pulling me off the mud. I bought a depth gague and put it in with softened bee's wax. Don't leave home without it...really!
I have since watched a video about hurling an anchor out to pull you out. Will try that if (when?) it happens again.
The embarrassing thing was I had "guests" with me when it happened...la dee da
Thanks guys. Good ideas I'll hopefully never have to use. The water was 10degC chilly ...wouldn't want to get wet. An idea that comes to mind...if you can't get the anchor out far enough...hang it from the end of the boom and swing it out maybe.
