The Boat US Hqtrs is in my neck of the woods and while their Boat US store (Alexandria area) adjacent to their business bldg was merged along with all the other ones into West Marine, this store still had the BOAT US Store Logo up and still had some remnants in it left over from the old Boat US Store days. Their last day is now coming. Believe it is July 7th. Then they close up shop and the employees go to the other West Marine stores in the general area (Old Town, Alexandria & Woodbridge both in Northern VA vicinity). They have been bringing in some closeout merchandise from other locations and assembling it in this "Boat US Hqtrs store" for 75% markdown off the orange sticker (already reduced prices). Of course, it always seems that either the apparel is not available in your size or the boat equip you want is not one of the sale items. But they indicated they are getting more stuff being delivered every day up to the closing, so stop by again. I picked up one thing - It was a bunk sheet with the top and bottom connected and a section to slip the pillow into it. It was normally $20..got it for $3. I am sorry to see this store go....Kind of a landmark in the area along with the Boat US Business Bldgs. I think the Boat US Graphics store will continue operation. It is adjacent to the Boat US/West Marine Store. I forgot to inquire about it but it was turned into the West Marine Graphics believe awhile back and believe that is where all West Marine's boat names/graphics are done.
Sorry to hear about Boat US closing. I'm in Austin, TX and we have never had one here. I'm a member though and have always wished to have a store nearby, it would be nice to have a choice when shopping. Consequently I check the local stores first, then go online to compare. I usually end up buying online, the selection is better.
I check on-line for some stuff and wind up buying some on-line and some locally. Probably many do similar thing. I purchased new sails (semi-local from Quantum) this past winter and then found that www.defender.com had the lines I wanted for main and genoa sheets at much less cost than the local West Marine store(s). I purchased my outboard locally but ordered a bunch of stuff (Outboard bracket, main sail cover and companionway boards storage cover) from Catalina Direct.
WM is all over the board with prices. Most of the time I expect to pay the premium when I go in there, but sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised. I was going to buy a couple of clam cleats from them yesterday, so I called both of the local stores to find out if they might have them (ClamCleat CL219] and between those two stores they had exactly one in stock, but it was 25% lower than the best online price I could find. On the other hand, I called them last week to see if they had the swaging tools to make lifelines. The clerk on the phone assured me they did and I could come in and make them myself and just pay for parts. When I got there I found they did not have a roller swager and they discouraged me from attempting to make lifelines without one. The said they could send them out and have them made for me, I would have them back in a 7-10 days. One of the clerks suggested I go up the road to a local shop that could handle the job. It turns out that the local shop can make them for me, using the proper fittings and stainless rope and it will cost about 1/2 what WM was going to charge.
