I was wondering how the cover of the masthead light is secured. It looks like there is a lot of tape wound around the bottom of mine. I am going in the water tomorrow...finally. I was going to change the bulb if I have time. However I dont want to get the cover off and not be able to get it back on. Anyone changed on lately? Thanks.

Mine also was supposed to twist off but was taped around the base. I found that several of the tabs that were supposed to hold it on were broke off. So I taped it back on when I changed my bulb.
I would be ready to have to tape it back on and the possibility that it is in more than one piece. We had our mast down a couple of years ago and had planned to replace the light when it was down. Lucky that we did since it had a small hole in the very top that would let in moisture when it would rain. We ended up replacing the entire light and fixture.. Got the new one from Catalina Direct.
Well I got the cover off no problem but the bulb was not what I expected. I thought it was the same as the running lights which I thought is what the manual said but it was this skinny looking thing which I could not even see how to disconnect. I did not have much time as the trailer was on the way to put me in the water so it looks like this going to wait until next year.
I don't go up the mast as much as I used to, so nowadays I replace anything questionable when I'm up there. Last time it was the bow light, the lens was looking pretty shabby. Next time up the mast I'll replace the anchor light with and LED version.
those lights are a good idea - however, I suggest buying lanterns or lights that use double A or triple A batteries because you can buy rechargables. I've tossed all my stuff that uses D batteries - I find also, that A and AA batteries last longer than D's.
Most of the guys in our marina use the tin hurricane lamps you can buy at canadian tire for $5 as anchor lights. Tie one on your forestay at a suitable height and it meets all the requirements. Not sure how th ecost of lamp oil compares to the cost of batteries though.
Assuming you are talking about the anchor light, the lens is a quarter turn. When I tried to remove mine, the plastic was very crazed and crumbled in my hand. The replacement is a aqua signal size 25 which is available at West Marine or Defender.
My boat had the anchor light removed, I suppose, and I wanted both a light for anchoring and a windex light for night sailing, so I made a reflector in the anchor light I installed that shines mostly outwards with a little shining upwards.
Then, of course, on this forum I learned about mini-windexes on the shrouds, and saw them in action on JimB's boat, too. But my LED anchor/windex light is sweeeeeeeeeet.
Be careful replacing the bulb in your masthead light. Mine takes a bulb with pointed contacts. The flat or inverted contacts won't work. Had to get the bulbs at WM.
