Has anybody every replaced a keel winch? Mine is toast. Is this a hard job or an easy job. I'm about to buy a new winch from Catalina Direct. It looks like it's a matter of unbolting the old one and bolting in a new one.

Having the right stuff on hand is helpful. This is a photo that shows a lot. Note the wood wedge between the bottom of the step and the wench frame. Make sure you put it back! It aligns the winch handle's arc.
I've replaced mine twice. The hardest part for me is getting a wrench on the nuts on the underside of the winch. It CAN be done by one person, but with two it's ever so much easier, especially if the one working the underside is on the small and nimble side.
Hi Bruce I would also replace the cable and turning ball and anything else attached to the cable at the same time.. Frank Law About Time 3519 83 swk sr
I replaced mine this April. It was fairly straightforward except that the old bolt holes did not line up with the new ones. So I had to drill one new hole in the top step and then use a dremel to router the cut for the washer. I replaced everything when I did it (hose, clamps, turning ball, etc. The whole project including the router took about 2 hours.

When I did mine solo I removed the bolts from the stairs, laid them down in the cabin, and replaced the winch/cable/turning ball. When finished, I swung the stairs back up bolted 'em back in place.
Dealing with 'stuff' was a lot easier with the stairs out of the way.
