Thought I would share some pictures of our annual trip from Oceanside to Catalina Island. We stayed the entire week at the island this year and had a great trip. The first part of the week my youngest daughter and two of her friends accompanied us. They went back on the ferry on Wednesday and we were joined by another of my daughters. I could easily have stayed another week if we could have finagled enough vacation time.
Enjoy!

Seal Colony on the Eastern end of the island.

Sharing the anchorage (Bird Rock in the background)

Lots of fish at Emerald Bay

Wonder why they call it Emerald Bay?

It looks so great! Did you all live aboard, or stay on-shore?

I'm guessing you sailed over with the girls, then they stayed on shore and you had the boat? At least that's what I would have done. =D

Actually, we all stayed on board. The girls slept below on a queen size air bed stretched across the cabin and the wife and I slept in the cockpit in a similar setup. We never did use the vee or quarter berth as beds. The air mattresses make for a much more comfortable platform. I have the old "L" shaped dinette so all you have to do islower the table and span the gap between the table and starboard bench with the covers from the storage areas beneath the bench. We spanned the cockpit by placing our two coolers on the floor. The coolers are conveniently the same height as the cockpit benches. It's not a hotel room but at about $25 a night for a mooring, compared to $250 a night for a hotel room in Avalon, it fit my budget just right. Also there are no other rooms outside of Avalon on Catalina except for a few cottages in Two Harbors. You can camp out as JimB intends to do next month (Jim introduced us to Two Harbors and Emerald Bay. Thanks Jim!) but then I have to haul the mattresses and bags to shore and back. We already consider the Catalina trip a camping trip of sorts so there you have it.

John,
I used a boom tent in the daytime to provide some protection from the sun. We did not use it at night as the dew was extremely light the week we were there. Barely noticeable. Temp's were in the low 60's at night with a low cloud cover usually. Good sleeping weather. Bug's are not an issue at night on the water at Catalina and rarely an issue in the daytime. Two Harbors is notorius for bee's but there were just a few and they didn't hang around.

Sounds like a great trip! If we were to camp out in th ecockpit up here, the mosquitoes would carry us off, never to be seen again.

What happened to the pictures in the original post? I was going to show them to my wife last night, but they had disappeared...

Sorry about that. Was doing some editing in Photobucket last night and didn't realize I had broken the links. They are now restored.

Hey Sloop, great pictures and it looks like a great trip. We had the opportunity to sail on your coast recently with JimB517 and had a great time. We're still feeling our boat out. We've only been in the water a few weeks, but so far we're really happy!!! In February we'll go to the Texas coast and do lot of coastal and intracoastal cruising,( two weeks). Thanks for the pics, you live in a beautiful place.
