Just bought Fellow Ship, 1989 Cat 25. I haven't been able to find any info on the pop top cover. Any ideas where I can find pictures or a sales outlet??
Welcome. So you purchased Franks C25! Wow. You are very fortunate. Dont know about pop top but you should be able to find something. Good luck. Steve A
I had a poptop cover made by Defender. I noticed their "Boom Tent" selections in the catalog and asked them to do the following:
1. Make a boom tent 10' x 8' out of Sunbrella (its waterproof). You could make it a little bigger or smaller, depending on how you wanted it to work, and what to cover. I have to cover the windows to keep the rain out.
2. In the short 8' end, make a semi circular cutout about 5" around, and set it back about 7" from the edge.
3. Put a grommet in each corner, and one 1/2 way down each 10' edge.
4. Put a grommet in the middle of the other 8' side.
So now the collar section fits around the mast, I tied the two forward grommets with string to the base of the forward stays, and I tied the two aft grommets with string to the winches.
I also have short bungies to make it more flexible.
Sometimes I lay the material down on the cabin top, other times I extend my boat pole and tie it to the mast and to the boom and use it to hold the boom tent up off the cabin top. This is really nice on a breezy day to circulate air into the cabin and shade the top.
Terry, you are indeed lucky to get Frank's boat. I have been hoping Frank did not have to sell her for any unfortunate reason, he was such an incredible asset to this community. I have a pop top cover for my 89 SR/WK, I will not be in a position to take any pictures for a week or so, but if you do not have things figured out by then I will post some photos. I think the only advantage over a boom tent is the ability to keep the bugs out. Where will you be sailing her? (I am an ex-Kansan myself, Lawrence)Best of luck with her, you have one of the finest out there...
Jeff, thanks for responding. I think Frank went less than a week before he was working on his new project. Check out General Forum, I think it's called sad about Frank, that should get you up to speed on Frank. As far as the pictures, that would be great. Something from the front side and companionway would give me a good idea what I need to have made. I'll be putting the boat in Eagle Mountain Lake just west of Ft Worth TX.
Terry, I believe the new Sunbrella tarp I had made will provide exactly what Bruce is talking about. It would be easy to add snaps to the new tarp and to the cabin top to make it fit more tightly when the poptop is raised. The new tarp should cover the cabintop when the top is down and the pop top when it is up, there is a cutout for the mast.
The original "pop top cover" was provided by Catalina to enclose the cabin with the pop top in the raised position. It was a Naugahyde cover with clear vinyl side windows that snapped tightly around the pop top and zipped up in front of the mast. It had long panels that closed off the companionway entrance. It made a tall, secure cabin space in the worst of inclement weather. It does not go over the boom but fits tightly to the pop top roof when it's raised. The photo is of a C22 version (not sure whose boat this is) it is similar to my C25 version but my "windows" are only on the side and do not wrap around the front otherwise it is the same. I was lucky in that mine was/is in perfect condition and I can ride out severe storms in comfort. It does not work with the pop top in the "closed" or "down" position. Many of the so called "pop top covers" I have seen are protection for the pop top but do not provide protected living space in inclement weather with the pop top in the raised position. I’m not sure if CD or Catalina makes new ones.
Here is the pop-top cover in action. (for those of you who did not follow this picture on a previous thread, I have no idea why there is a lamp in the foreground)
Looks like the lamp has been discarded. It's sitting on a trash container. We,too, have a pop top enclosure for our C-22 but haven't used it in years since the C-22 is raced only. We don't have one for the C-25. Interestingly, in almost 2 years of ownership, we haven't even raised C-25 pop-top yet. I'm only 5'7" and the admiral is shorter.
ilnadi, great picture, thanks. That gives me a good idea what the cover looks like. Your picture along with the picture that Breezy Cat sent should give me what I need. I hope to be in the water in the next week or so. When I get everything set up I'll see how the cover fits that Frank was good enough to send me. Thanks again.

I bet it would be close, but you would need to re-install any snaps on a previously used cover.

Probably not. CD offers two version of the pop top cover. One for hull #5802 and below and one for hull 5803 and up. Hull number 5801 is a 1988 model.
Thanks for all the input. Looks like Frank had already ordered what I was looking for. Thanks again, this is a great place to get any kind of answers!!!
